Brainwashing For Domestic Violence Survivors

This information is from my domestic violence course and my own personal experience.

How are you brainwashed?

Isolated, humiliated, degraded, physical power and threats, exhaustion, trivial demands some indulgences. Leaving you with no friends or support system. No outside contract, no money or happiness allowed to you. Uncomfortable to talk to you, so can’t call for help, put downs by those around you. Criticizing your choices, making a scene, hitting and screaming at you in public so you feel scared to speak out. Breaking your objects and belongings, slamming doors, sexual abuse, silent treatment, not allowed to sleep or rest. Continual nagging of you to do what they want, being made to feel responsible for them, having to look perfect for them. Needing to do just what they say to do, made to give presents, treats, surprises, low self-esteem, lonely and feeling alone in your own world, very dependent on your partner codependent. Feeling concerned and nervous of everything in your life. Feeling stripped of your own life feeling unworthy or worthless, can’t be bothered to try anymore and want to give up your life.

There will be no rights for your own needs so these can’t be met by you. Here are some words that could be used to describe what brainwashing is and how it will make you feel. You will be called selfish, irresponsible, thoughtless, deceitful, sneaky, idiot, worthless, ugly, fat, liar, easy, stupid, know it all, don’t want me, having to tolerate me, stuck in your own mind, imaging things, exaggerating, overacting, too emotional, weary or anything like that, need to try harder, something wrong with you, your fault, you’re the problem, need to fix you, try harder, your wrong. I am right, keep your eyes to yourself, stop flirting, I don’t like that, you made me do that, cruel, trying to punish me, you made me do it, I tried to help you. It’s for your own good, disorganized, no good, a problem, forgetful. Not allowed to leave me, not allowed to leave, I need you, I can’t survive without you, I am blaming you, you are nothing without me, tell me what you want, need etc. I saved your life, you need to do as I say, I want you to take care of me, you need to do as I say, I do everything for you, you are too much.
