Children’s Thoughts And Feelings During The Cycle Of Violence

This information applies to children who are being abused. These are the feelings and behaviours the children go thought when seeing and experiencing the violent cycle of their parents.

Build Up

Blames mother, worried, boys often become more aggressive,

girls become more placating.

Stand Over

Scared, act out, to distrust parents or to provoke attack and get it over with.

Explosion

Scared, numb, feels sick to my stomach.

Thinks to themselves where can I hide?

Why doesn’t it stop?

What did I do?

Remorse

Feels guilty, behaves well, confused, relieved, angry

Blames mother, feels very scared.

Feels sorry for father

Asks themselves was it my fault?

Relief, hope, anxious, good.

Honeymoon

Hope, tense, try harder, believes father

Boys -tend to rock the boat

Girls- become clingy
